TALL PERSON DEVELOPS FEAR OF HIS OWN HEIGHT

Freshman Nat Walsh has realized he is now afraid of his own height. Standing at a towering 6’8″, the very prospect of getting up has become terrifying to him.

“I’m actually afraid to stand up,” Walsh stated. “I don’t want to go all the way up there.”

He discovered how tall he was during his yearly physical and was at first unable to step off the scale, since the added two inches that the scale contributed produced thoughts such as “what if I fall off,” and “someone’s going to push me off this ledge and I’m going to die in front of a nursing student.”

His height will go on to impact every aspect of his life, and things such as sitting in the back seat of a car and avoiding hitting his head on all nearby objects will become daunting challenges. Beyond these daily struggles, he now has to worry about his safety under conditions such as icy pavement

“Just think how long of a fall it would be if I tripped,” Walsh stated. “Every time I stand up I’m taking a huge risk.” This newly developed phobia has made even walking to class a struggle.

“I have had to start crouching around everywhere I go in order to stay at a more comfortable altitude,” said Walsh. “Even the thought of standing completely upright makes feel nauseous.”

Luckily for Walsh he has friends like sophomore Melisa Cardoza to help him through these tough times. Cardoza said, “It’s pretty strange seeing him crouch around everywhere–it looks like he’s just trying to be very sneaky. I think he just needs to get his head out of the clouds and realize he’s not in that much danger.”

Specialists have full confidence that Walsh will one day be able to lead a normal life, but for now taping his shoes to his knees and pretending they are his feet will have to do.
